Do you use an iSomething to open my emails when I post?
If so, you might have wondered why the emails have gone black.
Me. too.
Especially as quite a few of you have pointed out (rather gleefully) that for years I’ve preached that reversed text (white on black) is the kiss of death to long copy. It reduces comprehension by 50%.
I freely admit I am an idiot fairly regularly – but not this time.
Thanks to Ian Waring I can reveal it’s not my fault but Apple’s.
Safari – Apple’s browser and email viewer – causes it. Version 5.0.0 – or earlier – to be precise.
The latest Safari update (Version 5.0.1) fixes it on Macs – use ‘Software Update’ to make it happen.
If you use an iPhone, iPad, or iPod then it should get to you fairly shortly.
Isn’t that amazing.
I don’t use an i anything, I use a PC, but when I tried to forward one of your emails to a friend (with the request that he subscribe himself) the email turned black on my screen.
More irritating, he could not read it when he got it. I fixed it by opening your blog in my browser (Chrome) copying and pasting the link into a simple email and sending him that. It worked.
Do you appreciate the lengths your loyal readers go to in spreading your word?
I believe it’s called “above and beyond the call of duty” and I do it for no more reward than than to expose more people to your own special brand of wit and brilliance.
Happy Christmas.
God will reward you, Peter; I can’t afford to:=) Have a good Christmas, and I hope you like the blues in my latest.
My version of Safari is 5.1.7, the emails are still black!

Glancing at a notice on the door of the gym, which asked people to close the door behind them so as to help keep the place warm, I asked a friend why he thought it necessary for the words ‘ the cold’ to be shown in enormous capital letters emblazoned with icicles, when the rest of the notice was in smaller type.
“Because”, my friend said, “the person that prepared the notice probably a youngster.”
“That explains it”, I replied, “more interested in graphics, less of design”.

Compliments of the Season
Oh dear!
I do so agree re design. Idiots who I assume can neither read aloud nor think – and I guess their teachers – are the culprits.
Re MatthewF: yes, in particular the Padstowe Horse is very well known in the UK as an exalpme of that. I seem to recall reading somewhere that part of the inspiration for this film came when Shaffer and Hardy(?) found themselves in Helston in Cornwall one May Day, and while not burnt in a giant effigy found themselves on the receiving end of a concerted blast of we don’t like strangers round ere from the otherwise-affable locals. Creepy stuff.
